Chamber Staff with VeloCity OKC recently published two separate articles noting the successes of the Oklahoma City area. As the Proudly Overbuilt™ home builder in the metro, it is important to note and celebrate the achievements of OKC.
Explore the first article from Velocity OKC here about saving money in Oklahoma or as quoted below:
“Oklahoma ranked as the No. 4 easiest state in the country to save money, according to a new Bankrate study that looked at financial conditions across all 50 states.
The study measured cost of living, taxes, employment growth and available interest rates on savings products to determine where Americans are most likely to grow their savings.
Tennessee, Missouri and Texas were the only states ranked higher than Oklahoma. The state placed ahead of Florida in the top five.
Bankrate reported that Oklahoma’s ranking came largely from its low cost of living, which was the second lowest in the country. Residents benefit from cheaper housing, food and goods compared to much of the United States.
The state’s 9% state and local tax burden is below the national median of 10.2%, placing Oklahoma No. 10 in that category. It also ranked No. 12 for local economic performance, based on job growth and affordability.
Oklahoma scored No. 13 overall for deposit interest rates, including third in average rates for money market accounts, according to the study.
The report found that Southern and Midwestern states tend to offer better conditions for saving, while Northeastern and Western states are more expensive and show slower job growth.
Hawaii was listed as the hardest state to save money due to high costs and declining employment.

Explore the second article from Velocity OKC here about low unemployment rates in Oklahoma or as quoted below:
“Oklahoma City ranked No. 1 lowest unemployment rate in April among the 56 U.S. metropolitan areas with a population of over 1 million, signaling strength in the local economy. The metro’s 2.3% unemployment rate was down from 3.0% in March.
This distinction highlights OKC’s sustainable economy and stable labor market. A low unemployment rate often points to strong job growth, consistent hiring, and economic momentum.
The April report marked the 45th consecutive month OKC has maintained an unemployment rate below 4%, the longest such streak in its modern history.
In comparison, Fresno, California, had the highest unemployment rate among large metros at 8.3%.
Unemployment statistics for April:
Across Oklahoma, unemployment in April was lower than a year earlier in 68 of 77 counties. Rates rose in six counties and remained unchanged in three.
These data points serve as an indicator of economic health. Low unemployment can signal that businesses are hiring, people are working, and the local economy is expanding steadily.
