Tips for Finding a Family-friendly Home

July 31, 2019

Right now, while you’re in back-to-school mode, you’re thinking about your kids. Okay, you’re actually thinking of getting them out of the house. But this is short-term. Your long-term plans should focus on your family and your home—more specifically, making sure that both work together harmoniously. Homes By Taber has some tips for finding a family-friendly home that fully supports your lifestyle.

Focus on the schools

Most parents already know that they need to consider the quality of the schools that will serve their kids in their new home. Whether you want a low student: teacher ratio, proven excellence in student progress and test scores, or availability of programs for special needs children, you can learn a lot online. GreatSchools and SchoolDigger provide details about schools in the city or town you’re considering. You’ll find information about class size and diversity, student:teacher and student:counselor ratios, test scores, academic progress, special needs programs, teacher experience, and reviews by parents. GreatSchools also offers important information about high schools, like graduation rate, college and career readiness, AP test performance, and the number of graduates who return to college for a second year. These qualitative indicators will guide you in making a smart choice about the school district where you want to live.

The Oklahoma City area is known for high-quality education. Edmond and Deer Creek are among the highest ranked in the state. Santa Fe High School in Edmond is ranked 8th among all Oklahoma high schools. Deer Creek Elementary School is 6th out of 406 elementary schools in the state and earned a perfect “10” from GreatSchools—as did Centennial Elementary School, Grove Valley Elementary School,Cheyenne Middle School, Sequoyah Middle School, Deer Creek High School, Memorial High School, Santa Fe High School, and North High School. These high marks don’t come easily. The district is committed to excellence. Norman and Moore present equally impressive schools. As a parent, your choices for a family-friendly home in a good school district become greater in this region.

A family-friendly location

It would also be helpful to buy a new home in an area where your kids can have fun. Parks, playgrounds, movie theaters, museums, zoos, theme parks, and more will make it easier for you to easily connect with a variety of family fun.

Oklahoma City is known for offering this wealth of diversions for families, with the Adventure District in Downtown OKC, which includes the Oklahoma City Zoo and Science Museum Oklahoma, plus White Water Bay, Frontier City, Brickopolis in  Bricktown, the Children’s Garden in the Myriad Botanical Gardens, the Youth Zone in the Boathouse District, Children’s Cowboy Corral at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. How about indoor skydiving or bouncing around at a trampoline park? It’s all here.

Our new homes at Woodland Park in Edmond provide an at-home adventure unlike any other community in the region. The community amenities include two swimming pools with their own beach and climbing wall, playground, splash pad, water bucket and slide, full-sized basketball court, fitness center, clubhouse, and community fire pit. You won’t need to drive your children to the fun they want because it’s right here in the neighborhood. With homes priced from $249,840, Woodland Park is amazingly affordable for everything you get!

Home, safe home

Safety is also a top priority when parents are looking to buy a new home. The area, the street, and the home itself should make you feel safe and secure.

Once you’re comfortable with the safety aspects of the neighborhood, think about your new home. What safety features contribute to your peace of mind? A smart home security system is a must. In a Taber home, the security system is always included as a standard feature.

In Oklahoma, we think a storm shelter is also critical to your family’s safety. Taber LeBlanc decided you shouldn’t have to choose whether or not to have this protection, so we include it in the garage floor of every home we build.

Think about the air you breathe inside your home. Did you know it contains up to 5 times the pollutants that are outdoors? When you consider this fact, shouldn’t indoor air quality be another safety concern for you and your family? We include both an air filtration system and a fresh air intake system in our homes. The kitchen vents also send the bad air outside through the roof, so you can breathe easily, knowing you’re giving everyone quality air with Healthy Home Technology.

Fit the floor plan to the family

As you’re browsing new homes and floor plans, pay attention to how the layout provides both privacy and safety.

You might consider a floor plan with a second-floor bonus suite so you can give teens and ‘tweens the privacy they’re craving. Use it as a bedroom, game room, or additional family room space. The Poppey Bonus Room, Sage, Blue Spruce, Hummingbird, Hazel, and Shiloh floor plans all offer the option to add an upstairs bonus room.

New home or old headaches?

Are you trying to decide between a move-in ready home and a fixer-upper? Think about the time and money you’ll need to invest to renovate, remodel, and/or repair a resale. Also, consider the inconvenience to family life while you’re doing it. You either compromise and live with it “as is” or spend weeks or months trying to make it what you want.

Conversely, a new construction home is completely move-in ready. The paint is fresh, the floors and appliances are brand new. There’s nothing to do but start enjoying your new home. In addition, the home is covered by a builder’s warranty so if something does need repair, you just need to make a phone call.

Homes By Taber has always focused on building homes for the way people live today. Our homes aren’t a structure, but a lifestyle. Our “Proudly Overbuilt” philosophy gives you more standard features than other builders provide—and still have the Elegance with Affordability you want. In fact, when we added it all up, our upgraded standards are valued at $75,250.

Take some time from your back-to-school shopping and tour our homes and communities in and around Oklahoma City. We have a great selection of move-in ready homes for sale so your kids could start the school year in a new home with all the modern conveniences. Interest rates are wonderfully low right now, so it’s the perfect time to buy a new home. Find out more when you talk to Frankie Lewis. He’ll guide you in the best direction for your family’s needs.
